IB English A HL Tutoring

Our IB English A HL tutoring programme fully covers the English A Higher Level syllabus, one of the most detailed language and literature courses in the IB Diploma Programme. We work systematically on every skill the course assesses, from literary analysis to academic writing. Our experienced IB teachers help students push their critical thinking and interpretation further.

The Language and Literature course covers both literary and non-literary texts (advertisements, speeches, articles, blogs). Language analysis (rhetorical devices, persuasion techniques, the relationship between language and identity), text types and purposes, mass media and media literacy, and literary works (poetry, novel, drama) and their contextual analysis are studied in depth. Different analysis techniques are taught for each text type.

The Literature course focuses entirely on literary works. We study poetry analysis (verse forms, sound features, imagery, symbolism), novel analysis (narrative techniques, character development, theme, motif), drama analysis (staging techniques, dialogue, conflict) and comparative literature. Works from different periods, cultures and genres are examined to build a broad literary perspective.

A few requirements set IB English A HL apart from SL: the Higher Level Essay (1,200–1,500 words), more literary works (at least six) and a higher standard of analysis. Our teachers teach critical analysis and argument to HL standard.

Paper 1 preparation is central to the course. The paper is the guided literary analysis on the Literature route and the guided textual analysis on Language and Literature; either way the skill of analysing an unseen text under exam conditions is developed. Identifying the text type, recognising literary devices (imagery, symbolism, tone, structure), forming a thesis and supporting the argument are taught systematically. Plenty of timed practice improves both the speed and the quality of the writing.

In Paper 2 (Comparative Essay) preparation students learn to analyse two works comparatively. We develop comparison techniques (theme, character, narrative techniques, context), essay structuring (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion) and academic argumentation. We use the markbands to show what IB examiners look for.

The Individual Oral (IO) and the Higher Level Essay are important components of the IB English A HL grade. For the IO we work on extract selection, identifying the global issue, structuring the presentation and Q&A preparation. For the HL Essay we teach how to choose a line of inquiry, research it, develop an argument and write academically. Our experienced IB teachers know the assessment criteria inside out.
