IB Chemistry HL Tutoring
One-to-one online preparation for the Chemistry Higher Level syllabus
The biggest share of IB Chemistry HL tutoring goes to organic mechanisms, where a student who cannot place the curly arrows loses the marks even with the right product. In 90-minute sessions we build the discipline of writing every intermediate step and unit, and we help you pick a Scientific Investigation that is safe and genuinely measurable.
Quick Answer
Most families book Chemistry HL support at the start of IB 2, because the practical half of the Scientific Investigation depends on your school's lab calendar and has to be planned early. Lessons are 90 minutes, one to one; packages of 10 or 20 can be split across subjects and never expire.

About IB Chemistry HL Tutoring
Our IB Chemistry HL tutoring programme fully covers the Chemistry Higher Level syllabus, one of the most detailed and demanding science courses in the IB Diploma Programme. We examine the structure and behaviour of matter from the atomic level to macroscopic properties with a systematic, detailed approach. Our experienced IB teachers make abstract chemistry concepts concrete with 3D molecular models, animations and laboratory applications.
The core topics can be grouped into three main branches. In physical chemistry, we cover atomic structure and the periodic table, chemical bonding theories (ionic, covalent and metallic bonds and intermolecular forces), stoichiometry and chemical calculations, thermodynamics (enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy), chemical kinetics (reaction rates, activation energy, catalysts), equilibrium (Le Chatelier's principle, equilibrium constants) and electrochemistry (redox, electrolysis, cell potentials) in depth.
In inorganic chemistry we cover a detailed analysis of the periodic table, transition metal chemistry (coordination compounds, colour and magnetic properties), the d-block elements and their industrial applications. Our teachers systematically explain periodic trends (atomic radius, ionisation energy, electronegativity) and their effect on chemical behaviour.
Organic chemistry is one of the broadest and most challenging parts of the IB Chemistry HL syllabus. We provide detailed teaching on the naming of organic compounds (IUPAC system), functional groups (alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amines), reaction mechanisms (nucleophilic and electrophilic substitution, elimination, addition reactions), stereochemistry and isomerism (structural isomers, geometric isomers, optical isomers). Our teachers visualise organic mechanisms in order with electron-flow arrows.
HL-specific advanced topics include energetics and thermodynamics (Born-Haber cycle, lattice enthalpy calculations, entropy and Gibbs free energy), biochemistry (protein structure and function, enzymes and enzyme kinetics, lipids and carbohydrates), medicinal chemistry (drug design principles, pharmacokinetics) and environmental chemistry (atmospheric pollution, water chemistry, green chemistry). We make these complex concepts understandable and applicable.
The Internal Assessment (IA) project makes up 20% of the IB Chemistry HL grade and is a critical piece of work in which students demonstrate their scientific investigation skills. We work with you at every stage of the IA: choosing a research question, forming a hypothesis, defining variables, experimental design, data collection and processing, uncertainty and error analysis, graphing and scientific report writing. Our experienced teachers know the assessment criteria inside out and teach the strategies needed for top marks.
Exam preparation is handled strategically and systematically. Under the current IB Sciences syllabus (First Exams 2025), the exam consists of two written components - Paper 1 (multiple choice + data-based questions) and Paper 2 (short and long-response questions, with a data booklet and periodic table provided) - plus the Internal Assessment (IA). Past-paper practice, mark scheme analysis and timing practice are done regularly. Students learn to think from the IB assessment perspective and structure their answers accordingly.
Our service is fully individual to the student's level, goals and university plans. A strong Chemistry HL grade is critical for students targeting medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering or biochemistry. We build a solid chemistry foundation for students starting in the Pre-IB period and offer intensive revision and past-paper work to IB Year 2 students during exam season. Our programme plans together the content, problem solving and exam strategy a student needs for high goals.
IB assessment experience
Lessons are, wherever possible, planned with teachers who have relevant subject experience and a strong command of the IB assessment criteria. For some subjects we can offer lessons with teachers who have IB Examiner experience; matching is done based on subject, level and teacher availability.

About grade boundaries: According to the grade boundary documents the International Baccalaureate Organization publishes for each exam session, the total percentage needed for a 7 varies by subject, level and session in a band of roughly 55–85%. Your school's IB coordinator can access the relevant May/November Grade descriptors and boundaries document. In our one-to-one lessons we review the student's realistic grade range together using past-session boundaries and mock results.
IA / Written-Task Support
Where do one-to-one lessons provide support on the Internal Assessment and written tasks?
An experiment that is both safe and measurable
In chemistry these two often pull against each other: most experiments a school will allow produce no clear difference, and some that would are not permitted in the lab. We look for the range that satisfies both before the experiment is chosen.
A concentration you can genuinely vary
You need to set the independent variable at five or more values and to prepare those values safely. We work out the dilution plan before you start - a good share of IAs stall exactly here.
Uncertainty carried through the calculation
Burette, balance and measuring-cylinder readings each bring their own uncertainty, and these accumulate through the calculation. We work that accumulation out during the session using your own raw data.
Chemical reasoning in the evaluation
Writing that heat was lost earns nothing; writing at which step, roughly how much, and in which direction it moved your result does. We work on that reasoning on the draft.
Feedback on drafts
We give feedback separately on the choice of experiment, the raw data and the full report. We do not write the report for you; IB academic honesty forbids it.

Study Plan Framework
A typical 4-phase structure for IB Chemistry HL Tutoring in one-to-one lessons; adapted to the student's exam date.
Diagnosis
weeks 1-2
- We separate whether marks are lost on calculation questions or on organic
- Checking whether the mole concept is genuinely settled
- The weighting of the programme follows from that
Calculation discipline
weeks 3-7
- The habit of writing intermediate steps and units
- Setting up stoichiometry and energetics questions
- Clearing out significant-figure and unit errors
Organic mechanisms
weeks 8-13
- Arrows that show the electron movement correctly
- Deriving a mechanism rather than memorising it
- HL-only mechanisms and synthesis routes
Scientific Investigation
6-8 weeks, set by your school's IA calendar
- Choosing a safe and measurable experiment
- The dilution plan and the uncertainty budget
- Rounds of draft feedback
Paper technique and rehearsal
the 8 weeks before the exam
- Using the data booklet at exam pace
- Writing the intermediate steps in Paper 2 long questions
- Full-length past papers
This framework is a sample plan; it is customised for each student based on exam date, target grade and current level.
How One-to-One Lessons Work
The general structure of IB Chemistry HL Tutoring sessions
In organic, you draw the arrows
Watching a mechanism on the board does not transfer; in the exam you have to draw the arrows yourself, and the marks go to showing where the electrons move rather than to the right product. You draw every mechanism and we correct it.
Making intermediate steps a habit
The only reason to reach the right answer and still lose marks on a calculation is leaving out the steps and the units. We treat this as a habit rather than a knowledge gap and set the same layout on every question.
Deriving mechanisms instead of memorising them
At HL you can meet a mechanism you have never seen. We practise deriving it from where the electron density sits; a memorised list is no help with an unfamiliar molecule.
A written progress report every two weeks
We share what was covered, what stage the IA is at and what comes next, in writing.
